Why Evolve j-FamilyReady Carrier Screens?

Evolve j-FamilyReady Carrier Screens provide advanced carrier screening technology to detect carriers for Jewish genetic disorders.

Jewish genetic disorders are conditions that occur more frequently in individuals who descend from Ashkenazi Jewish, Sephardic Jewish, or Mizrahi Jewish populations.  Evolve has available both Ashkenazi and Sephardic-Mizrahi j-FamilyReady Carrier Screens.

It is highly recommended that all couples with ANY Jewish ancestry, including interfaith couples, have carrier screening performed prior to starting a family.

Genetic Testing Beyond Tay-Sachs

It is important to know if you are a carrier. Anyone can be a carrier.

Carrier screening is a personalized genetic test that can determine if you and your partner carry genetic mutations that can lead to serious inherited disorders in your children.  A simple saliva or blood test can determine your carrier status. If two partners are carriers for the same recessive genetic disorder, then there is a 25% chance of passing that disorder onto each child you have together.  Individuals of Jewish descent are at increased risk to be carriers for genetic disorders due to certain recessive conditions having higher incidences among these populations.

Several prominent Jewish community groups have advocated for carrier screening within the Jewish population, including the Dor Yeshorim program, the Central Conference of American Rabbis, and the rabbinic arm of the Reform Movement.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the American College of Medical Genetics (ACMG) have also recommended genetic carrier screening specifically for those of Jewish descent.

What Do My Results Mean to Me?

Once you receive your results, there are many options available to you and your healthcare provider.  Early awareness can make a difference for the natural course of many genetic disorders.  Carriers may use the information to help plan and make informed decisions for a healthy future.  Reproductive options can be discussed in greater detail with your healthcare provider.
